Marx and Weber differ from Durkheim in how they define modern industrial capitalism not just in terms of the specialized division (Teilung) of labour but also the spatial separation (Scheidung) of city and country and the socio-economic separation of workers from the means of production: âCapitalist production therefore reproduces in the course of its own process the separation between labour-power and the conditions of labourâ (C: 723). The appropriation of land, by which landowners displace peasants from their means of subsistence and colonial settlers remove indigenous people from their way of lifeââso-called primitive accumulationââis reproduced constantly and intensified daily in the factory and private enterprise where workers neither own nor control the instruments of production. Weberâs later sociological and political writings, such as âParliament and Government in Germanyâ (1918), repeatedly point out that Marxâs insight can be extended to include a wide range of leading institutions in capitalist society, including the bureaucratic state and the organizations it administers:Whether the organization is a modern state apparatus engaging in power politics or cultural politics or pursing military aims, or a private capitalist business, the same, decisive economic basis is common to both, namely the âseparationâ of the worker from the material means of conducting the activity of the organizationâthe means of production in the economy, the means of war in the army, or the means of research in a university institution or laboratory, and the financial means in all of them. (Weber 1994: 147)
